Clinical Training

The Fellowship is divided into 12 months of clinical time and 12 months of research. The clinical portion includes inpatient Hematology consults and rotations on the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Service at Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, and at Hillcrest Medical Center in San Diego (which mainly accommodates underserved populations), as well as outpatient rotations in non-malignant and malignant Hematology.

Significant exposure to non-malignant Hematology is provided during consultative inpatient Hematology rotations as well as in the outpatient setting. Since UCSD is a tertiary care center, the Hematology inpatient consult service resolves numerous non-malignant Hematology consults, reflecting unique patient populations, and diseases, intersecting with other high-level services (e.g., Organ Transplant, Pulmonary/Critical Care, Neurosurgery, high-risk Obstetrics, Trauma Surgery, Stroke Center). Patient demographics, ethnicity, social status, and cultural backgrounds vary widely, sensitizing Fellows to health care disparities.

Exposure to malignant Hematology is provided through inpatient and outpatient rotations on the BMT service which is responsible for most patients with acute and chronic leukemia and myeloma.    

Fellows also rotate through the Flow Cytometry Laboratory, Heme/Path, the Special Coagulation Laboratory, Transfusion Medicine, and Apheresis in collaboration with the Department of Pathology and the Division of Nephrology.

Fellows will also engage in a half-day per week outpatient continuity clinic that is delivered in several blocks to accommodate training in (non)congenital bleeding/clotting disorders, sickle cell Disease/hemoglobinopathies, and consultative hematology.

Inpatient services

While on the Consult Services, the Fellow is the primary contact for all matters related to Hematology.  Patients are evaluated, and diagnostic and management plans are developed. Attending Rounds are held daily, with emphasis on teaching and constructive case discussions. The Hematology Service is a consult service at Jacobs Hillcrest Medical Centers. The BMT Service is an inpatient service at Jacobs Medical Center

Outpatient services

The outpatient clinical rotations and continuity clinics occur at several sites. See descriptions below. Fellows will evaluate and manage ~5 patients per half-day clinic.

Outpatient clinics will encompass consultative non-malignant hematology, vascular medicine (Interventional Radiology), hemostasis/thrombosis and hemophilia, sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies, and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

Outpatient clinics geared toward malignant Hematology involve BMT, leukemia/lymphoma, myelodysplasia, cytopenias, myeloproliferative disorders, myeloma, and regenerative and cellular therapies.

There are also opportunities to engage in monthly Youth Transition Clinics, Global Hematology Clinics (zoom with the site in Mozambique), Apheresis Clinic, and the combined Heme/Ob-Gyn clinic.
