Vascular Ultrasound Mastery for Physicians

banner with image of person with instrument

This educational program is designed for any health care provider, but in particular for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and physical therapists involved and/or interested in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) as an imaging tool to assist with diagnosis and monitoring of deep (and superficial) venous thromboembolism in the upper and lower extremities, as well as visualization of the neck vasculature (including jugular vein and carotid artery) and portal/hepatic vein system. The course will also include the identification of abdominal structures such as spleen, lymph nodes, liver, kidneys, bladder and large abdominal vessels (particularly vena cava and aorta). Basic concepts of pathophysiological findings will be discussed. Pediatric practitioners are welcomed. Teaching will involve the use of hand-held ultrasound devices to pave the pay for patient-centered care at bedside or in outpatient clinics.

If you would like to extend your learning experience, we offer an additional program, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training for Hemophilia and Other Arthritic Conditions Live Course. This is a 1-3 day hands-on, in-person course developed to provide training in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) for evaluation of hemophilic joint disease, but also other arthritic conditions and musculoskeletal abnormalities and syndromes. These courses are held upon the conclusion of the main 2-day course.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:
  1. Discuss the basic physics of ultrasound to be able to select and maneuver transducers, identify anatomy, physiology and pathology while imaging vascular structures.
  2. Prepare for and perform the patient exam using proper ergonomics to prevent injury.
  3. Properly drape and prepare the patient for the ultrasound examination.
  4. Assess patient symptoms for urgent vs. routine venous ultrasound protocol.
  5. Perform a venous ultrasound using a handheld ultrasound system.
  6. Recognize useful imaging artifacts when performing a vascular ultrasound.
  7. Use gray scale, color and Doppler to evaluate and anatomy with ultrasound.
  8. Accurately and efficiently identify venous physiology and pathophysiology with ultrasound.
  9. Describe vascular resistance with ultrasound.
  10. Evaluate non-vascular and incidental extremity findings with ultrasound.
  11. Use published ultrasound criteria to document and report findings.

Overview

Hematology-Focused POCUS Training, presented by UC San Diego School of Medicine, is an online curriculum (6 hours) developed to provide training in POCUS to evaluate deep venous thromboembolism (DVT) and various manifestations of hematologic conditions. The main objective of the online course is to enable physicians and other care providers to use POCUS as a POC imaging tool to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic conditions. The course will cover imaging fundamentals and basic physics of ultrasound, the scope of POCUS, vascular anatomy and sono-anatomy as well as equipment considerations in respect to handheld devices. The course also informs how to interpret images in the setting of a case-based approach

Experts will provide lectures and case presentations. This program has been developed to provide a comprehensive introduction to POCUS, augmenting the hands-on classroom courses. Hands-on training will be provided in a separate offering as an extension of this online course.

This online program is enduring and be accessed anytime.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe POCUS basics
  2. Identify vascular anatomy of the neck, upper and lower extremities, in addition to splenic/hepatic vasculature to evaluate for venous thromboembolism
  3. Identify basic lung and heart structures to evaluate for pleural and pericardial effusions
  4. Identify intrabdominal landmarks such as kidney, spleen, liver, aorta, vena cava
  5. Apply standard POCUS transducer positions for the vascular anatomy and intrathoracic/intra-abdominal structures
  6. Describe the most common artifacts and pitfalls during joint ultrasound scanning

Covid-19 Health & Safety
We follow state and local guidelines and protocols related to COVID-19 safety measures. Due to the high risk for transmission in indoor settings, attendees may be required to wear a facemask, regardless of vaccination status. Individuals who fail to comply will not be able to participate. In such a situation, no refunds of registration fees or other venue/travel related expenses will be provided. The risk of spreading COVID-19 is decreased when all parties are vaccinated. Vaccination or negative COVID-19 test result verification, remains an important strategy to reduce transmission.  We expect all attendees of in-person activities to be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, or agree to take a COVID-test within 48 hours of the start of the event. All attendees should be prepared to provide evidence of vaccination status, or negative test results, if asked to do so by activity organizers. We reserve the right to update COVID related expectations at any time, should local and state guidelines change and prevailing COVID rates increase.
