Overview

“Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training in Hemophilia – Online Course”, presented by UC San Diego School of Medicine, is an online curriculum (9.5 hours) developed to provide training in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) for the evaluation of hemophilic joint disease and musculoskeletal abnormalities. The main objective of the course is to enable physicians and other care providers to use MSKUS as a point-of care-imaging tool to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of joint and muscle pains. The course covers specific elements geared towards hemophilic joint disease to recognize joint bleeding, synovial hypertrophy and synovitis by use of Power Doppler, cartilage degradation, osteochondral lesions and other structural joint abnormalities. The course also includes a teaching module pertaining to the Joint Tissue Activity and Damage Exam (JADE), a validated ultrasound imaging protocol for hemophilic joints. Also, the course features a module explaining the limitations and advantages of ultrasound in comparison to other imaging modalities like Magnet Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computer Tomography (CT) Imaging. After completion of the online modules course participants/attendees will be eligible to attend a session of tele-guided ultrasound instruction with a MSK ultrasound faculty instructor, experienced in imaging of hemophilic joints. Leading MSK ultrasound experts will cover joint mechanics, point-of-care aspects of the use of MSKUS in hemophilia, rapid bleed detection, pediatric imaging and instructions and applications for the Joint Tissue Activity and Damage Exam (JADE), a validated ultrasound protocol, providing an algorithm to quantify intraarticular soft tissue expansion, osteochondral changes, inflammation and vascular remodeling in hemophilic joints. This online program is enduring and be accessed anytime.

NEW! Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training in Hemophilia course is now CPTA accredited.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Interpret and apply sono-anatomy of ankles, knees, elbows
  2. Apply standard MSKUS transducer positions for ankles, knees, elbows as needed to evaluate hemophilic joints
  3. Describe the diagnosis of effusions
  4. Describe bloody from non-bloody effusions
  5. Describe a diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound recognizing methods to detect hemarthrosis, synovitis and structural abnormalities (such as meniscus, tendons, ligaments)
  6. Describe synovitis by Power Doppler
  7. Evaluate cartilage health, soft tissue and synovial hypertrophy, and osteochondral lesions
  8. Describe the limitations and advantages of ultrasound for hemophilic joint disease
  9. Describe the Joint Tissue Activity and Damage Exam (JADE) Hemophilia joint ultrasound protocol

Overview

“Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training for Arthritic Conditions”, presented by UC San Diego School of Medicine, is an online curriculum (6 hours) developed to provide online training in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) to evaluate arthritic conditions and musculoskeletal abnormalities of ankles, knees and elbows. The main objective of the online course is to enable physicians and other care providers to use MSKUS as a point-of care-imaging tool to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of joint pains. The course will cover imaging fundamentals and basic physics of ultrasound, anatomy and sono-anatomy, limitations and advantages of ultrasound compared to other imaging modalities like Magnet Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computer Tomography (CT), as well as equipment considerations. The course also informs how to interpret images in the setting of a case based approach across a wide range of MSK abnormalities, such as ankle sprains, gouty arthritis, hemophilic hemarthrosis, menisceal tears, effusions and others. Leading MSK ultrasound experts will provide lectures and case presentations. This program has been developed to provide a comprehensive introduction to MSKUS, replacing previous in person hands-on classroom courses to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Hands-on training will be provided in a separate offering by personal tele-guided remote ultrasound sessions as an extension of this online course.

NEW! The Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training for Arthritic Conditions: Ankle, Knee and Elbow course is now CPTA accredited.

Objectives

  1. Describe MSKUS basics, basic physics and knobology
  2. Discuss the basic operations of an ultrasound machine
  3. Interpret and apply sono-anatomy of ankles, knees, elbows.
  4. Interpret basic structural abnormalities by sono-pathological findings
  5. Apply standard MSKUS transducer positions for ankles, knees, elbows
  6. Recognize common arthritic conditions like effusions, tendon tears, cartilage erosions and other
  7. Describe the most common artifacts and pitfalls during joint ultrasound scanning.
