Research Interests

Differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (ES) into hematopoietic progenitors and animal models of in vivo hematopoiesis and stem cell repair. The main interest of our laboratory is in vitro differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into hematopoietic progenitors, with special emphasis on dual hematopoietic/endothelial precursor called hemangioblast. Our hypothesis is that human ES cells can readily differentiate into hematopoietic progenitors with the use of appropriate cytokines and that this process can be optimized and upscaled using bioscaffolds. We focus on studying molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways involved in this process. The ultimate goal is to develop in vitro generated, human ES-derived erythrocytes for transfusion medicine needs.
